Edwige Fiaclou stands as a shining example of what it means to overcome obstacles, blaze new trails, and inspire others along her way. With her unwavering determination, profound expertise, and a relentless pursuit of excellence, she has carved a remarkable path in tech. Let’s find out more about her!

# Can you introduce yourself in a few words?

I am a French citizen residing in Switzerland, an enthusiastic globetrotter who enjoys engaging in conversations and sharing the richness of cultures. When I work with my teams, my aspiration is to create a diverse, creative, and dynamic ecosystem. Together, we strive to deliver software solutions that have a profound impact and embody responsibility.

# What was your IT journey like?

I started my journey in software engineering during my studies. Implementing websites and simple games with my friends not only helped me cover part of my study expenses, but also allowed me to enjoy and explore the potential of different technologies. It was during my master's thesis, where I developed an Automatic Tester for Android Applications, that I discovered my favorite programming language. This experience made me realize the vast possibilities and impact that technology can have on the daily lives of people worldwide.

After moving to Switzerland, I began working in the banking industry, where I had the opportunity to work on various layers of IT, ranging from scripting to trading algorithms. Throughout this journey, I was promoted, which enabled me to diversify my skills and develop both self-awareness and social skills for effective leadership.

Today, I find immense fulfillment in being part of a team that contributes to the growth of both products and individuals. Being able to support and foster growth in both areas brings me great joy.

# Can you tell us more about your role as?

As the Head of Tech Talent and Methodologies, I oversee the onboarding process for all newcomers, regardless of their profiles, from software engineers to system analysts. Together with my team, we have developed an onboarding process that enables individuals to quickly ramp up on technical knowledge and business understanding, ensuring their efficiency in product delivery. My goal is to align people with best practices and foster an open mindset towards technical design and technology.

With the Methodology team, we drive the interaction and coordination between the Software Engineering Teams and external departments such as Business and Technical teams. Additionally, our team handles complex program management, addressing multi-squad problems with long-term impacts.

In my pursuit of excellence, I continuously monitor and assess promising start-ups, keeping a close eye on their activities and exploring potential synergies between their products and our business. As the Head of this hub, my mindset is to promote excellence through diversity and innovation.

# If you had to sum up your career in one sentence, what would you say?

I would say that maintaining an open mind and cultivating social awareness has been instrumental in navigating complex business landscapes and selecting the most suitable technologies to foster both people's growth and product development, ultimately striving for excellence.

# If you could switch careers with anyone for a day, who would it be and why?

During my teenage years, I took a test that indicated that careers such as surgery, software engineering, or Mathematic teaching would suit me best. I have pursued and accomplished the latter two, but I have always harbored a desire to transition into the field of medicine. However, now that I am a bit older, it may be a bit challenging to pursue that path. Nevertheless, it's never too late to dream and explore new possibilities, but I would not because it is a too critical domain to start now J!

# If you could time-travel to any point in history with a piece of modern technology, where would you go and what would you bring?

I would definitely go back to London in the 1870s. Firstly, because the fashion of that time, especially for women, was absolutely stunning. Additionally, I would love to meet Ada Lovelace and personally show her the immense impact she has had, not only in terms of technology but also for women's empowerment. I can only imagine her reaction if I were to show her a laptop - she would probably perceive me as an extraterrestrial being!

# Short overview about what you will talk about at DevTalks 2023?

I hope that my talk will empower leaders in the software industry to actively support the growth and development of their team members. Furthermore, I aim to emphasize the responsibilities we hold as managers, leaders, software engineers and principal engineers. This job is not only fulfilling but also a wonderful opportunity to make a positive impact, and I hope to convey that through my presentation.

# What is your message for our Romania IT community?

Keep growing and always remember that each one of us is like a superhero, bringing forth new and exciting technologies, infused with a spirit of innovation. Let's continue to push boundaries, embrace challenges, and make a lasting impact in the world of technology. Together, we can achieve incredible feats and shape the future.
