Next big stage of human evolution
Speaker Session
About the talk
My talk is about digital transformation. Digital transformation is a word that means many different things to many different people. At first glance it appears to be just a move from the analog to the digital world. But it is much more than that. It is an integral part of human evolution. A species has never been able to predict how it evolved. We could never predict our move from stone and sticks to microchips. Evolution only makes sense looking backwards. Therefore, as we step into the next big stage of human evolution, let us see what is potentially in store for us and how we can influence our evolution.

Neural networks: insane in the membrane
Speaker Session
About the talk
Neural networks are one of the most dominant forms of AI algorithms being used today. They seem to be the right solution to a myriad of problems and are often considered to provide objective answers to a variety of complex questions, but why? A neural network can be tuned to cope with a wide range of situations, which is great, but is it always correct to do so? We will present a range of manipulations to a predefined neural network to show their effects on the results it can produce. Examples are the use of different training sets and variations in configuration, but also changing the neural network during runs, which could affect it in certain and uncertain ways. We will explain why this is not necessarily a fault of the network or even a bad thing in general, but that it does require some careful thinking when working with neural networks. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results, but how about the opposite? All over the world, people working on neural networks are taking different approaches but are expecting the same results. Is that not insanity?

Workshop (November 23): Your last chance to learn Java8
Speaker Session
About the talk
The Java language and versioning has taken a new path. Every 6 months a new version is released, bringing new features and improvements to the language and the JVM. You might discuss that these changes started with the release of Java 8 in March 2014. After three years of Java 7 it brought a whole new (functional) paradigm to the Java programming language and marked grand point in the history of the Java language.
Since Java 8 is almost at the end of its lifecycle, and will be replaced by Java 11 as a Long Term Supported version, now is the time to learn which new and important features it brought us.
In this workshop we will go into the functional paradigm of Java 8, handle Lambdas, Optionals, the Streaming API and the major rehaul of the date-time API. Did you miss the transition to Java 8 or still don’t have the feeling you grasped its new features? Now is you last chance to learn them in an in-dept workshop!

Speaker Session
About the talk
Based on the international study of Hofstede, each nation has cultural-related particularities. Until we start working, the influence of different cultures is not very present in our lives. The most frequent current scenario is that either people work in an international company, have international colleagues or work with international stakeholders. When these different cultures come into contact, to understand their particularities is to enable performance.

About the talk
Blockchain technology is hot! But how does it actually work? To understand a new technology, it always helps to try to build something with it yourself. So that’s what we’re gonna do in this session: building a blockchain from scratch, using plain old java and a little Spring Boot, and getting it working in 40 minutes! During this introductory session, all concepts associated with blockchain technology are explained, such as: transactions, blocks, mining, proof-of-work, and reaching consensus about the state of the blockchain in the blockchain network.
After this session, you will have a better understanding of how blockchains actually work so you can start applying this knowledge to your own projects. There will also be a link to a workshop so you can try it out yourself!

It is obvious now that we live times in which software requests change faster and faster. We find ourselves in the situation in which we have to deliver today what was not planned yesterday yet. So how can we still ensure quality software with this struggle on our shoulders? We have to change the way we think about development and realise that the change doesn’t come only from the way we work, but also from the architecture of the system and the tools we use. A bottom up approach that can drive us to the future.

How to Build Products People Care About
Speaker Session
About the talk
In this talk we’ll discuss how an experimental approach to product development will lead to the many small failures that are essential to achieving great outcomes. We’ll share stories from our experience in startups and enterprises, the mistakes we made along the way and how we came to the realisation we needed to approach building products differently.
We aim for you to leave knowing how to practically apply an experimental approach to your product development, how to create a culture of experimentation and to recognise the dangers of launching without learning first.

Breaking into DevRel
Speaker Session
About the talk
A lot of people asked me over the past year how I managed to break into DevRel, mainly how I got to be a Developer Advocate. So I sat down and talked with newly minted Developer Advocates I met during the last year, and a pattern emerged. I’m going to share the stories and the common points we all shared on our way to become Developer Advocates!
Turns out we were all successful at at least some of these things:
– writing technical content
– talking at events
– building developer communities

Aurelian Scarlat - Career Talk: Analysis Paralysis in Your New Project
Speaker

Aurelian Scarlat
Development Team Lead at Ubisoft
About Aurelian Scarlat
Doing PHP since about 2001, worked on different projects of different sizes – from tiny to massive – across different industries – e-commerce, gambling, real estate, mobile gaming, etc.
I do back-ends as well as pixel perfect front-ends. I’ve been using MySQL, HTML, JavaScript, CSS, AngularJS and also a bit of Java (Spring). I’ve worked with Laravel and Symfony.
My main focus was always to expand my knowledge and I’m also quite apt at many related stuff: CI/CD, AWS, Docker, Linux (obviously), git.
In the last few years I’ve been involved in different efforts concerning microservices, which proved a lot of fun and the possibility to develop slim, fast responding APIs.
Analysis Paralysis in Your New Project
Speaker Session
About the talk
There are way too many good choices to be made in the IT world. Lots of programming languages, frameworks, deployment strategies, hosting companies, cloud providers, etc. Analyzing every option means that sometimes you become incapable of making a decision because it might not be the right one. Or you might keep postponing a decision until the project has no real way of being on time.

How to train your junior, or how to train yourself
Speaker Session
About the talk
A company hires somebody as a junior developer. It is quite common, but not at all easy. The first goal for the junior to become someone who can help with the heavy lifting. It a hard job from the junior, and seniors of the team as well. Through the years we’ve learned a lot how to do this job while we helped more than 500 people to become software developers. In this presentation I show a few best practices how and what to learn as a junior and how to help them in this process as a senior by focusing on soft and hard skills as well.
